Workers involved in hazardous waste cleanup, handling hazardous materials
or other hazardous substances, face a more serious safety and health
risk than do most construction or manufacturing operations. In addition
to the typical slips, trips, and falls found in other construction or manufacturing
operations, employees handling hazardous waste or chemicals
may encounter a variety of other hazards including fires, explosions, and
health-related issues associated with exposures to toxic substances.
Although heat-related disorders can occur in a variety of work environments,
heat stress and heat-related illnesses are an especially difficult
situation to handle on construction sites. These heat-related disorders
become more difficult when working with hazardous materials, particularly
when workers are required to wear specialized personal protective
equipment (PPE). Under other conditions workers may have a potential
to encounter high levels of radioactive materials mixed with hazardous
material (termed "mixed waste"). Although mixed waste has been found
in a variety of industries, it is considered somewhat unique to Department
of Energy (DOE) sites
