The use of machinery on stage is staggering in its variety. A machine may move a load in excess of 100,000 pounds, or drop a feather on cue. An effect may be as sim- ple as a pneumatic cylinder closing a door, or as complex as a whole system of syn- chronized winches assembling the pieces of a chandelier into a single unit over the audience’s heads. There have been battery powered wirelessly controlled boats, hydraulically elevated flying cars, and over one hundred years ago, chariot races complete with real horses running on treadmills, and locomotives racing along belching smoke, sparks, and steam. All of the machinery used for these effects share one thing in common, they were all designed and built specifically for use in one production to realize the artistic vision of a director and a set designer.
This book is about this type of machinery, and it is written for the theatre tech- nicians who design, construct, install, and often operate it. These technicians, and their employers, are a highly diverse group too. Their level of formal education in machine design runs the gamut from none to degrees in mechanical engineering, their experience with such equipment may be limited or extensive, and their employment may be in educational or regional theatres, in opera houses, or in com- mercial scene shops serving the Broadway, Las Vegas, touring or theme park mar- kets. Not surprisingly, given the breadth of both the topics that could be covered, and the diversity of the potential audience for this book, it will never satisfy anyone all the time—that is an impossible goal. This book does however provide a solid base to start from, and its main intent is as a text and reference book for theatre technicians interested in this area
